Happy June! School is out (or will be soon) and summer is finally here! With long beach days and fun in the sun ahead, don’t forget to take sun safety seriously.
Sun safety is important to prevent skin damage, premature aging, and skin cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. At Altered Latitudes, sun safety is a priority in everything we do. Our Sun Protection Performance Shirts and Hoodies offer UPF 50+ protection. That means our clothing only allows 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation to pass through it. So, wearing our shirts and hoodies will reduce your skin's UV radiation exposure by 50 times (98% UV block) on covered areas.
6 SUN SAFETY TIPS
What do you need for sun safety? Here are 6 ways to protect you and your crew from the sun.
1.) Wear Protective Clothing
Luckily, Altered Latitudes has you covered! Check out these great options:
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on areas not covered by our shirts or hoodies. Apply the sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours or after sweating or swimming.
Here are some great sunscreen options that are also environmentally friendly!
- Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Sun Milk Body Lotion SPF 50
- Sun Bum Mineral SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Face Lotion
- SkinCeuticals Light Moisture UV Defense SPF 50
- Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40
Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your face, ears, and neck from the sun.
4.) Give Shade a Chance!
Try to give yourself a time limit and stay in the shade during the sun's peak hours, which are generally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re going to the beach, bring a beach umbrella. This is a great option:
5.) Sunglasses!
Wear sunnies that block UV rays to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them. We love these environmentally friendly brands:
- Mita Sunglasses
- Fun fact: Mita starts with five water bottles and transforms them into a pair of wearable, high-quality, lightweight, and super cute eyewear. They also work with different nonprofits to keep our ocean clean.
- Seaclean
- These glasses are also made from upcycled bottles, and for every pair sold, $5 is donated to ocean cleanup.
It is smart to check your skin regularly for any changes, such as new moles or spots, and see a dermatologist if you notice any changes.

What Are the Symptoms of Too Much Sun Exposure?
Too much sun can affect you in a number of ways. Of course, you’ll be able to see skin redness and later on blistering. But you might also experience pain and tingling, swelling, headache, fever and chills, nausea, as well as dizziness due to dehydration. Sun poisoning is real and dangerous, so be sure to follow our sun safety tips above so you can enjoy every moment of summer instead of being stuck inside with a blistering sunburn - or sun poisoning.
