6 Cool Things About the Chesapeake Bay
You probably already know the Chesapeake Bay is bordered by Maryland and Virginia. But did you know:
1. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the U.S.
It's also the 3rd largest in the world. The Bay covers 165,759 square kilometers, is 200 miles long, and holds more than 18 trillion gallons of water. It has over 11,684 miles of shoreline. -The Chesapeake Bay Foundation
2. The average depth of the Bay is 21 feet
The deepest point is 174 feet near Kent Island, MD. But it's otherwise fairly shallow.
3. Over 150 major rivers and streams flow into the Bay
The watershed ranges from Cooperstown, NY, to Norfolk, VA, and includes parts of 6 states. The 3 largest are the Susquehanna, Potomac and James Rivers.
4. It's home to over 300 species of fish
Plus 3,300+ shellfish, crab species, plants, underwater grasses, and more.
5. Once home to more than 74 Lighthouses
Today, 30+ of these still stand and 23 still aid navigation.
6. Our Shirts Help Protect the Bay
Our UPF 50+ Solar Shirts not only help protect you from the sun's damaging UV rays, they also help protect the Bay. How? Because our shirts replace chemical sunscreens that can wash off into the water. Chemical sunscreen do a lot of damage to animals and their habitat.
